More Bordeaux River Cruises

From Bordeaux, a World Heritage site with over 350 classified buildings, travel down river to the Gironde estuary past the English-owned Patiras island. The small port of Pauillac shipped wines for centuries, brought down by barge along the waterways, and is now a starting point for tours into the Medoc wine region passing chateau such as Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Latour, and Chateau Mouton Rothschild.

Upstream past Bordeaux on the River Garonne, reach Cadillac, a fortified town built by the king of England in 1280 as part of the defence of Aquitaine from the French. An excursion to the massive castle at Roquetaillade shows the legacy of English power, ended by the Hundred Years War in 1453.

Continue to the Dordogne river and the market town of Libourne. From here visit the village of St Emilion, noted for its wines and underground passages, before returning to Bordeaux for a tour of the city and overnight.

BOP - Bordeaux and Wine Country Rivers Itinerary

Day 1 - Bordeaux (France)

Board the your ship between 6pm and 7pm in Bordeaux. After settling into our cabins, we have a welcome drink in the lounge and are introduced to the crew. After dinner, we have a welcome party on board.

Day 2 - Bordeaux - Pauillac

We head down the River Garonne and then join the River Gironde, passing Cazeau Island and Patiras Island before arriving Pauillac in time for lunch on board. Built long ago by wine merchants or ship captains, Pauillac has managed to preserve the fine stone houses along its quaysides. Take an optional helicopter ride over the Medoc (advance booking essential and subject to flight conditions) on a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Our optional excursion this afternoon is to visit the Medoc (reservation in advance essential) - the renowned region where the most famous red wines in the world are cultivated, a strip of land squeezed between ocean and estuary with a mild, humid climate ideal for wine cultivation. We pass through most of the great Medoc appelations such as Saint Julien, Margaux, Haut-Medoc following the famous Chateaux Route and the chateaux of Lafite-Rothschild, Latour and Mouton Rothschild. There is a second optional excursion: take the optional bike tour followed by a glass of grand cru and tasting of regional cheeses at a prestigious chateau in Pauillac. We return on board for dinner and an evening of entertainment.

Day 3 - Pauillac - Blaye

We set sail early this morning, cruising along the Gironde to the estuary. We pass the Meschers-sur-Gironde with its steep cliffs, Troglodyte houses and fishermens' huts, before arriving in Blaye. This superb acropolis was an ideal look-out post to watch for invaders and its fortress is the biggest attraction in Blaye. We set off on our optional excursion along the Corniche, or cliff route. Narrow and picturesque, the road snakes alongside the River Dordogne before reaching the Gironde Estuary. As we travel, we catch a glimpse of charming gardens, ancient fishermens' houses, remarkable dwelling places carved out of the heart of the cliff, not forgetting the famous carrelets, the unique fishermens' huts perched on wooden stilts on top of the water. The scenery here is an unusual combination of river, rocks and vines. We stop in the village of Bourg, a charming city built on a rocky outcrop enclosed by medieval ramparts. Perhaps take the alternative optional excursion to Blaye Citadel, built in the 17th-century. We return on board for dinner and moor for the night in Blaye.

Day 4 - Blaye - Libourne or Bourg - Saint Emilion

We set sail early this morning, taking breakfast as we head towards Libourne. Set off by coach on our optional excursion to Saint-Emilion village for a guided tour of the medieval city. Please note: Depending on docking availability, Libourne may be replaced by Bourg.

Day 5 - Libourne or Bourg - Cadillac

We have breakfast heading for Cadillac. After passing the island of Cazeau, we head back upstream along the Gironde before joining the Garonne again. We pass the city of Bordeaux and arrive in Cadillac in time for lunch. This afternoon we have optional guided visits to the chateau at Roquetaillade and to Cadillac. The magnificent medieval chateau at Roquetaillade is a historic monument built during the 12th and 14th centuries. Its unique 19th century interiors are listed as part of France's historic heritage. A second optional excursion takes in the hills of Cadillac, passing Chateau des Ducs d'Epernon and exploring vineyard trails. We return on board for dinner. The rest of the evening is free. We moor for the night in Cadillac.

Day 6 - Cadillac - Bordeaux

We have breakfast and lunch on board today as we return to Bordeaux, where we arrive in the early afternoon. We set off by coach for an optional guided panoramic tour of the city, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See the key sights and fine buildings on the banks of the River Garonne before visiting Old Bordeaux. Perhaps take the alternative optional excursion - a bike tour taking in the UNESCO-listed sites of Bordeaux. We return on board for the gala dinner.

Day 7 - Bordeaux

After breakfast on board, we disembark around 9am.

Please note that this schedule may be modified by the Captain in the light of tidal and other factors. Optional excursions may be booked on board except the Pauillac wine excursion to the Medoc and helicopter ride over the Medoc which must be booked in advance.
